Monocrotaline induced Pulmonary Hypertension (PAH)

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is one form of a broader condition known as pulmonary hypertension, which is high blood pressure in the lungs.

In rats, a single subcutaneous administration of monocrotaline induces increases in right ventricular (RV) pressure and pulmonary vascular modelling, approximately 4 weeks after monocrotaline administration.

Monocrotaline treated animals recorded a mean  Fulton’s index of 0.35±0.04 versus vehicle treated animals of 0.20±0.04. Prophylactic and Therapeutic treatment of Sildenafil did not result in any changes in monocrotaline induced increases in Fulton's index.. Monocrotaline treated animals recorded a mean RVSP (mmHg) of 68.5±7.1 versus vehicle treated animals of 35.5±3.3.  Prophylactic and Therapeutic treatment of Sildenafil significantly attenuates monocrotaline induced increase in RVSP.
