Dried Blood Spot (DBS) sample analysis

Dried blood spot (DBS) sample analysis is performed after blood is collected from the fingertip (heel for newborns), absorbed onto a filter card and dried. A buffer solution was originally added for subsequent analysis of DBS eluates. However, surface sampling techniques such as desorption electrospray ionisation (DESI), direct analysis in real time (DART) and direct electro spray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) have negated the need to change the DBS to a liquid form.

There are numerous applications for DBS testing: preclinical drug development, analyzing serological markers (e.g., Hepatitis B/C virus, or HIV), and therapeutic or toxicological drug monitoring.
