Automated locomotor activity measurement

Automated locomotor activity tests evaluate the ability of a test drug to interfere with normal motor functioning after acute administration. These tests may be conducted as part of the safety pharmacology evaluation of a drug and may provide relevant information about behavioral similarities of a test drug relative to known drugs of abuse.

Spontaneous locomotor activity is a useful parameter reflecting physical and mental status of experimental research models.

Locomotor activity is measured in specially designed enviornments that project infrared beams from one side of a surrounding to the other. Each time a research model moves within its environment, it breaks the beam, allowing a computer to record the time and position.
