V-myc myelocytomatosis viral oncogene homolog (c-Myc ) is
a multifunctional, nuclear phosphoprotein that plays a role in cell cycle progression,
apoptosis and cellular transformation. c-Myc controls the
transcription of a variety of different targets and regulates different processes, such
as cell adhesion, DNA replication, inflammation, molecular transport, cell metabolism to
name a few [1 ].
c-Myc activates transcription of Carcinoembryonic
antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1 )
regulating cell adhesion [2 ], [3 ]. Pericentrin
(Kendrin ) and TH1-like (TH1L ),
regulated by c-Myc , promote cell cycle progression and gene
transcription [4 ], [5 ], [6 ], [7 ].
c-Myc may also control DNA replication by activating the
transcription of SET nuclear oncogene (SET ) [8 ], [9 ].
c-Myc target Troponin T type 1
(TNNT1 ) regulates muscle contraction [10 ], [11 ].
c-Myc is an important regulator of enzymes of cell
metabolism, including Vitamin K epoxide reductase complex, subunit 1
(VKOR ), Mannosidase, alpha, class 2A, member 1
(MA2A1 ), Fucosyltransferase 4
(FUT4 ), Lactate dehydrogenase B
(LDHB ), Lactate dehydrogenase D
(LDHD ), ST8 alpha-N-acetyl-neuraminide
alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 1 (SIAT8A ) [7 ], [11 ], [12 ], [13 ], [14 ], [15 ], [16 ], [17 ], [18 ], [19 ], [20 ], [21 ].
c-Myc may also modulate proteolysis by regulating
Ubiquitin-like modifier activating enzyme 7 (UBE1L ) and
Hepsin ; and RNA processing by regulation of
Fibrillarin [9 ], [11 ], [22 ], [23 ], [24 ], [25 ].
In addition, c-Myc regulates many ion and protein
transporters, including nucleoporin 153kDa (NUP153 ),
Chloride intracellular channel 4 (CLIC4 ), LIM and SH3
protein 1 (LASP1 ) and Golgi integral membrane protein 4
(GPP130 ) [9 ], [18 ], [26 ], [27 ], [28 ], [29 ], [30 ], [31 ].
c-Myc controls inflammatory processes by the regulation
of Chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 7 (CCR7 ) [11 ], [32 ].
Finally, c-Myc modulates processes of development by the
regulating the transcription of Thyroid stimulating hormone, beta
(TSH-beta ), Fibroblast growth factor 23
(FGF23 ) and Msh homeobox 1
(MSX1 ) [7 ], [20 ], [33 ], [34 ], [35 ].
There are also several c-Myc targets with unknown
functionality, e.g. non-protein coding RNA 273 (LOC649159 )
[18 ].
