| COVANCE ELECTS DR. ROBERT BARCHI TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS |

Princeton, New Jersey, August 25, 2003 Covance Inc. (NYSE: CVD) today announced that it has elected Robert Barchi, M.D., Ph.D., Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, to its Board of Directors, effective October 1, 2003.
Dr. Barchi has extensive experience in the management of complex institutions and in medical research and pharmaceutical development. He has been Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the nation's most prestigious universities with more than 22,500 students and 4,800 faculty members, since 1999. Previously, he served as Chair of Penn's Department of Neurology and as founding Chair of the University's Department of Neuroscience. Dr. Barchi was also Director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences for more than 12 years and was the Director of the Dana Fellowship Program in Neuroscience and Director of the Clinical Neuroscience Track. He was the founder and President of Penn Neurocare, a regional specialty network. Dr. Barchi is the author of more than 150 publications in his fields of neurology and neuroscience.
Dr. Barchi is a graduate of Georgetown University and earned his Ph.D. and M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is board certified in the specialty of neurology, an area in which he continues his clinical practice. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and has received numerous awards for his outstanding work in the sciences.
