2 June 2003, Princeton, NJ Covance Inc. (NYSE: CVD) has announced the promotion of Wendel Barr to the position of President, Early Development, based in Madison, Wisconsin, and Anthony Cork to the position of President, Early Development, based in Harrogate, UK. This move supports the regional decision-making employed by our clients in the preclinical segment. Both Wendel and Tony have become Corporate Senior Vice Presidents and they will also serve on the Global Leadership Council of Covance.
"In contrast to our clinical and central lab businesses where decisions are generally made on a global basis, having strong general management on site and geographically focused in these large, preclinical lab-based businesses is critical to success," said Joe Herring, President and COO. "Both Wendel and Tony have grown into the role of President, demonstrating exceptional managerial and leadership attributes and have delivered spectacular results both in 2001 and 2002."
Mr. Cork joined Covance in 2000 as Vice President and General Manager of Laboratories Europe. Mr. Cork has lived and worked in six countries in Europe and the Middle East during his 25-year career in the pharmaceutical industry, including management roles at Eli Lilly & Co., Schering-Plough Corp. and Aventis SA. He holds a BSc in Theoretical Physics and an MBA from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Barr joined Covance in 2000 as Vice President and General Manager of Laboratories, North America. Prior to joining Covance, he was Global Vice President and General Manager of Marconi Medical Systems. Prior to joining Marconi, Wendel spent more than 15 years with GE in its Medical Systems business in a variety of positions with increasing responsibility. He holds an M.B.A. in Business Administration from the National University, San Diego, CA, and a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology from DeVry Institute of Technology, Phoenix, AZ.
"We have made significant progress over the last two years to deepen and strengthen our pool of management talent in order to promote executives from within Covance," said Chris Kuebler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We intend to intensify our efforts to build organizational strength by bringing in new talent and by promoting from within to create greater opportunities for our people going forward."
