COVANCE STRENGTHENS PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS MANAGEMENT TEAM

Princeton, New Jersey, September 25, 2001 — Covance Inc. (NYSE: CVD) is pleased to announce that Dr. Timothy D. Rhines has joined the company as Operations Manager, Pharmaceutical Analysis. In this position, Dr. Rhines will lead a team of scientific staff at Covance's nonclinical laboratory facility in Madison, Wisconsin. Covance's pharmaceutical analysis services are used by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to test the quality of products manufactured for use under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations for pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, and animal health products.

Dr. Rhines brings 19 years of experience in analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis, with more than 11 years experience in the contract research organization (CRO) industry. Most recently, Timothy was the Director of Product Testing at Oread in Lawrence, Kansas, where he managed analytical requests from multiple groups within and outside of Oread to complete pharmaceutical development projects. He oversaw groups responsible for stability programs, release testing, monograph testing, compound characterization and microbiological testing. Previously, Dr. Rhines was the Director of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Bioanalytical Systems — BAS Analytics Division, West Lafayette, Indiana.

Dr. Rhines received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in Chemistry and Mathematics. He went on to receive a Doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
