COVANCE APPOINTS NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY
Dr. Timothy D. J. Halls Will Enhance Its Early Development Capabilities

PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY, November 16, 1998 — Covance Inc. [NYSE: CVD] announced that Dr. Timothy D. J. Halls has joined the company as Vice President, Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In this position, Dr. Halls will manage Covance's pharmaceutical chemistry business segment, further strengthening its early development capabilities.

"Dr. Halls' expertise in metabolism and how it affects drug delivery will enhance Covance's preclinical toxicology and chemistry capabilities," said Joseph Herring, General Manager of Covance's Early Development Services. " We can save our clients time and money by providing new ways to speed the "go — no go" decision in early drug development."

Dr. Halls brings 17 years of chemistry and management experience to Covance, with over 10 years in the CRO industry. Most recently, he was Director, Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics at Ricerca, where he was responsible for initiating a new business venture in bioanalytical services, a capability that utilizes analytical chemistry to measure the quantity of drugs in the bloodstream during testing. Previously, he developed a metabolism group at ABC Laboratories as the company's Vice President, Metabolism Programs. Timothy was also a Research Chemist/NMR Group Manager at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, where he conducted discovery and metabolism research, specializing in determining the structure of unknown molecules.

Dr. Halls received a Bachelor of Arts degree from David Lipscomb University in Tennessee. He went on to receive a 1981 Doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry from Rice University in Texas.
