COVANCE ELECTS KATHLEEN G. MURRAY TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Princeton, New Jersey, July 14, 1998 — Covance Inc. [NYSE: CVD] today announced that it elected Kathleen G. Murray to its Board of Directors effective June 9, 1998. Ms. Murray is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Northwestern Memorial Corporation in Chicago, IL. Northwestern Memorial is a premier academic medical center with revenues of over $600M and a member of Northwestern Healthcare Network, the largest healthcare system in the Chicago area.

Ms. Murray has more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She joined Northwestern Memorial in 1986 and is recognized for her leadership in the development of clinical centers of excellence, her financial management skills, and her commitment to excellence in patient care. Ms. Murray is active in the American Hospital Association, where she currently serves as Chair of the Governing Council for Metropolitan Hospitals. She also serves on the board of the Illinois Hospital and Health Systems Association, Dominican University, and The Economic Club of Chicago. Ms. Murray participates in a number of other civic and community activities, as well.
