COVANCE APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF PHASE I CLINICAL RESEARCH
Dr. Mary L. Westrick Will Strengthen Early Drug Development Capabilities--

Princeton, New Jersey, May 18, 1998 — Covance Inc. [NYSE: CVD] announced that Mary L. Westrick, Ph.D., has joined the company as Director of its Phase I Clinical Research Unit. In this position, Dr. Westrick will manage the company's 60-bed Phase I accelerated-testing unit in Madison, Wisconsin and further expand its early drug development capabilities.

"With experience across all phases of clinical development, Dr. Westrick will bring a new perspective to our Phase I unit " according to Michael Wokasch, Group President of Covance's preclinical services. " Her broad understanding of clinical trial design and execution will help optimize the Phase I process for our clients and further the achievement of a seamless transition from preclinical to subsequent phases of clinical development."

Dr. Westrick will also bring enhanced expertise to the company's Team INDTM process — a unique, integrated approach to accelerating the early drug development process.

Dr. Westrick brings 15 years of clinical research experience to Covance. Most recently she was Vice President, Corporate Operations at Collaborative Clinical Research, Inc. and was responsible for managing Phases I through IV clinical operations. She was also a founder and President of GFI Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., a professionally managed Phase I through IV clinical site. Prior to this, Dr. Westrick was responsible for the development of central nervous system drugs from preclinical through late-stage clinical development at Bristol-Myers Company.

Dr. Westrick received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in Indiana. She went on to receive her Master's of Science degree in 1980 and Doctor of Pharmacology degree in 1983, also from Purdue.
