Covance's Biotechnology Services in Harrogate, UK, covers more than 16,000 square feet of laboratory space. The biosafety suite is specifically designed for the testing of cell banks, bulk products and additives within tissue culture and virology laboratories. Positive control viruses, indicator cell lines and client samples are handled in separate laboratories, which exceed the requirements for p2 classification. A temperature-controlled laboratory also is available for validation of downstream processes for viral clearance.
In addition, we offer two microbiology laboratories, one specifically for mycoplasma analysis, and a second suite dedicated to molecular biology. A wide variety of molecular biology techniques are performed, but the major activity is qualitative and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The design of the PCR facility allows for the four key activities of master mix preparation, sample extraction, positive control preparation and amplification, and visualization to be carried out in separate laboratories. A number of laboratories are dedicated to sample extraction to prevent cross-contamination, especially in some of the high-throughput applications.
Finally, the Harrogate facility provides a suite of laboratories for cGMP-compliant protein analysis studies encompassing stability, formulation and identification of products and contaminants. |
