Rigorous testing to assure the physical and chemical identity of raw ingredients as well as quantitate the level of components of interest is a key factor in maintaining quality standards for dietary supplements. Covance offers all of the analytical services required to meet US Pharmacopeia (ASP, www.usp.org) and Food Chemical Codex (FCC) monograph standards. Wherever possible Covance uses established methodologies as documented by recognized scientific organizations such as the Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC, www.aoac.org), International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH, www.ich.org) and American Chemical Society (ACS). In cases where existing methodologies are not sufficient, Covance has the expertise and resources to modify, develop and validate assays to corroborate levels identified in label claims or established specifications. In addition, we analyze raw materials and finished products for contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides. Covance's preeminence in the analysis of novel raw materials is exemplified by our leading role in the AOAC's initiative to develop and collaboratively validate methods for ephedra alkaoloids as well as several other major dietary supplement ingredients.
